Example Midterm

Why Is There a Midterm?

We didn't use to have a midterm or final. But we realized that utilizing exams is massive norm and thought we would attempt to work within that norm. We use these norms as an opportunity for us to model some alternative and authentic types of assessment, as an opportunity for you to review and apply what you have encountered up to this point, and it's a break from the normal routine which is important for the "flow" of an online class.

You will need to complete the work for this final before going into the quiz tool. Then just copy and paste or follow the directions as needed. This wiki part is available before the quiz tool so that you can get started right away!

Please note that this is a COPY of what will be in the actual Blackboard (LMS) quiz tool.

1. Focus Essay (Draft). Scenario. 20 points.

Your friend and colleague was suddenly asked this semester to teach a course online. The course is up and running and a couple of weeks have passed. Your colleague is very stressed and has come to you in a bit of a panic because he or she is having some issues with her students. She's receiving tons of emails from students asking for help with finding content, asking what to do next, etc. Some students are also complaining that they aren't sure online learning is for them because they feel very isolated. What assumptions would you make about how this course got started? What suggestions do you have to a) help your friend right now and b) how to get started next semester because she's going to teach it again. Make sure provide some references from the books and readings in this course. View the rubric for this essay. You will receive full points for this attempt as it is a draft for the Final Exam Focus Essay.

2. Essay. Phases of Engagement. 10 points.

View the Phases of Engagement table on p. 11 of Engaging the Online Learner by Conrad & Donaldson (2004). How has this course applied the phases of engagement thus far? What would you predict is coming for the rest of the course based on the phases of engagement? To receive full points, your essay should answer the questions, stay on topic, and make sense. Feel free to use video (like Viddler or YouTube) or audio (Audacity & Lame or Myna) to create this essay. You will need to provide a link for the video file in the LMS quiz tool or send me a mail message with audio file attachment (mp3 please) and note that you did this in the LMS quiz tool.

3. Essay. Key Vocabulary. 10 points.

Write an essay about online learning community using at least 10 of the words below. You can edit the words as needed. For example if a word needs to be plural or changed in tense, etc. For example, collaboration could be collaborate, collaborator, etc. Highlight the words you use with an asterick. For full points, your essay should include the 10 words, it should be about online learning community, and it should make sense. Feel free to write poetry or a song. Feel free to create it on a wiki page and link to it from the LMS quiz tool.
